ELGYDIUM PHYTO, a plant-based solution to prevent dental plaque and its complications
Biofilm and dental plaque
As soon as teeth brushing is done, a thin film of salivary proteins starts to deposit on teeth surface (the « dental pellicle »). Some mouth bacteria (Streptococcus sp. and Actinomyces sp.) stick to this film and multiply to form a thicker film called « biofilm ». Other bacteria join in and, together, they produce organic compounds which protect them. This mix of germs and organic substances constitutes the dental plaque. With time and when mouth hygiene is not optimal, mineral deposits appear on the plaque, called « dental calculus » or « tartar ».
Dental plaque is responsible for three major tooth and gum problems : tooth decay, gingivitis and periodontal disease.
Eliminating biofilm to prevent dental plaque
Initially, biofilm is easy to eliminate with brushing. If this is not done on a regular basis, biofilm sticks stronger to teeth surface and evolve as plaque, which is more difficult to eliminate. This is the reason for which dentists recommend to brush teeth two or three times a day, after each meal.
Antiplaque toothpastes contain cleaning agents and antibacterial substances which helps eliminate biofilm and early plaque deposits.
Myrtle’s antibacterial properties
ELGYDIUM PHYTO toothpaste contains natural myrtle extracts (Myrtus communis). This aromatic, Mediterranean shrub leaves have been used for centuries as an antibacterial, anti-inflammatory and astringent remedy.
Harvested and dried in Morocco, the myrtle leaves used in ELGYDIUM PHYTO are processed by Pierre Fabre Laboratories to extract active antibacterial compounds (myrtucommulones and ursolic acid, among others).
In laboratory experiments, natural myrtle extracts have shown some effectiveness to eliminate biofilm and decrease the multiplication of some of the bacteria which are responsible for dental plaque formation.
Natural myrtle extracts and fluorinol act synergistically
To develop their ELGYDIUM PHYTO toothpaste, Pierre Fabre Laboratories combined antibacterial myrtle extracts and enamel-protecting fluorinol. This patented organic fluorinated substance binds to teeth enamel five times more intensely than mineral fluoride, even after a one-minute brush. By increasing enamel resistance to acidic substances produced by dental plaque bacteria, fluorinol helps prevent tooth decay.
During in-vitro studies involving four typical dental plaque bacteria (Streptococcus oralis, Streptococcus mutans, Streptococcus gordonii, Actinomyces naeslundii), the combination Myrtle extracts 2% + Fluorinol 1350 ppm was able to decrease by 99% the number of bacteria within the biofilm. This excellent results are patent pending.
ELGYDIUM PHYTO, an antiplaque toothpaste for daily use
Designed without preservatives, ELGYDIUM PHYTO may be use daily, as early as age twelve, to better eliminate biofilm and prevent dental plaque build-up. It may be combined with a toothbrush specifically-designed to eliminate plaque deposits, for example the ELGYDIUM ANTIPLAQUE toothbrush.
Menthol and camphor-free, the ELGYDIUM PHYTO toothpaste does not interfere with homeopathy. Its eucalyptus flavor provides long-lasting freshness after brushing.
